My new PC
Well...!! After days of waiting, my new PC finally arrived late last night. An AMD64 3000+ processor, 512 MB of RAM, 80 GB SATA HDD and a CD-RW, it is a bare bones machine. My biggest fear was whether Debian would detect the SATA disk. Full credit goes to Bimal for sitting with the installation. It was actually a breeze, especially when compared to installing Fedora Core. Debian flawlessly detected the SATA drive, and the entire installation process took about 20 minutes. Of course, the fact that IIT Madras is an official debian mirror helped.
Many thanks to Bimal and Sanand for sitting through the installation.
The system works really well. I am seriously thinking of adding 512 MB more of RAM once I have the cash. Right now I am broke.
debian really looks cool. Now begings the long process of actually fine tuning my system. I have named her madhulika, after the raga.
Also, I added the old IDE disk from my old machine into the new one. That too was detected flawlessly, and we were easily able to mount the old drive. So now I have 100 GB of space :)
I am gonna install a firewall. Have to be careful these days.
Anyway, I llook forward to great days ahead with madhulika. That reminds me of Hari's sarcastic comment on my hostname. Yeah, maybe it's true. So what?
And yes, it is definitely proper that I thank Mr. Sree Prasad of Infomint, who sold me this PC, and Sreenath sir for having introduced me to him. Thank you!
Bye for now. More later on.
